Two architects are in a conference room, they are talking about what materials use in the construction of a new building for his company. Ninoska Ruiz, she is an expert in stone, and who also use the plasticity of concrete in her work, and Sarahy has lived all his life in New York and he loves work with metal structures such as the skyscrapers that are in the city.
Ninoska:Hi, well I’m here to talk about why a think the Stone is the best option for our investment. One of the advantages is its durability; also the Stone and brick can increase the thermal mass of a building, giving increased comfort in the heat of summer and the cold of winter.
Sarahy: That is true, but the brick is also easy to transport opposite to Stone and easy to produce.
Sarahy: we can get a beautiful work like “the library Virgilio Barco” designed by Rogelio Salmona.
Ninoska: yeah, this building is really beautiful!
Sarahy: Well, everybody let me tell you about steel. It is the perfect structural material, it’s strong in compression and tension more that any other material.
You can think of building a skyscraper. The Big buildings have been Used to show off power and Wealth. in the history Some of the most dramatic buildings of the past include the pyramids in Egypt, and the gothic cathedrals of France in this moment the height of these buildings was limited by how massive and heavy they had to be at the base. But now we can do a transparent building of glass, the steel skeleton supports the main loads of the building. The steel can produce greater unsupported spans.
Ninoska: well, this discussion has been very interesting, i have to say, that if you want to build a skyscraper the Concrete is one of the most common materials, beyond the steel supports, because it is enormously versatile. Its composition can be changed depending on the needs of the building. It can be reinforced to make it stiffer and stronger by setting steel mesh or bars into the concrete. And additives can make it set or harden faster or slower depending on the needs of the design.
Ninoska: And it has the advantages of continuity and of fusing with other materials.
Sarahy: true, but the concrete is not good working in tension.
